Don was born in Montreal but grew up in Burlington Ontario. Don attended the University of Waterloo where he obtained a Bachelor of Environmental Studies (B.E.S.). Don worked in the private sector for Dominion Life Assurance Company in Waterloo after graduation. He attained a Master’s Degree (M.A.) in Economic Geography in 1982 and shifted gears to the public sector, starting with the Economic Development Division of the City of Toronto, later moving to Halton Region, and then moving on to the role of General Manager of the City of Cambridge Business Development Department in 1987. For 10 years he guided the development of some of the most important business projects in the City’s history including developing new industrial parks adjacent to Toyota Motor Corporation’s first Canadian automotive assembly plant. In 1997, Don started Canada’s Technology Triangle Accelerator Network (CTTAN) an initiative to provide early stage equity capital and advice to emerging fast-growth companies in the Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge area. In 1998, Don was named as the first Director of Economic Development for the Regional Municipality of York. A few years later Don took on the CEO role of the Oakville Economic Development Alliance during a time of restructuring. Don returned to York Region in 2003 to implement a number of new business development programs aimed at export trade, tourism and new start-ups. In 2006 Don became General Manager of the Economic Development, Culture and Tourism Division of the City of Toronto. During his time there he orchestrated the development of a new “creative city” economic strategy and led the formation of the Mayor’s Economic Competitiveness Advisory Committee. In 2007 he was invited to the role of Director of Economic Development for the City of Brampton, a post he held until 2011. From 2011 until 2015, he was a Economic and Comunity Development Facilitator. In April of 2015 he retired. Don and his wife Pat have 3 children and Jake, a faithful golden retriever. Don splits his time between Aurora and his lakeside home on Lake of Bays in Muskoka Ontario where he enjoys being on the water, hiking and walking Jake.
